The desert landscape of Taghit is absolutely breath-taking. Nestled deep in Algeria along the Sahara, the town rests against the dunes, which rise up like towering walls of sand. Nearby, narrow roads beside dried river beds lead to outcroppings etched with petroglyphs. The oasis itself is a mixture of mud-baked ruins and modern buildings, interspersed with palm groves.
In 2017, I wrote a piece for the travel site GoNOMAD documenting my visits to this Algerian oasis. Chosen as one of their Best Stories of 2017, my article is the feature of today’s blog post. The introduction is below, and I urge you to click “Continue reading…” to read the rest. As a special bonus, I’m adding a few other pictures below that are not on GoNOMAD. Enjoy!

My Original Article “Algeria: Discovering a Desert Oasis”
Our hotel bus sailed down the paved road from the airport, as rocky outcroppings dotted the sandy landscape outside our windows.
The road dipped and turned, following the gentle rise and fall of the low hills.
Finally, as the bus mounted another rise, there it was – the Algerian oasis of Taghit.
Thick groves of green palm trees stretched down the valley, punctuated by the rosy hues of houses and homes. Towering dunes rose behind the city, framing our view like a beautiful backdrop, with only the desert beyond it.
